Google is making major upgrades to AI Mode, its experimental search feature that lets users ask complex, multi-part questions and get deeper answers. First launched in March, Google AI Mode is now available to more users, with no waitlist, and comes with new tools designed to improve the search experience.

The expansion comes as Google ramps up efforts to challenge rivals like ChatGPT Search and Perplexity AI. By removing access barriers and adding smarter capabilities, the tech giant aims to make AI-powered search more useful and engaging.

AI Mode Now Available Without Waitlist

Previously, access to AI Mode was limited. But now, anyone in the U.S. aged 18 or older can use it—if they’re enrolled in Google Labs, the company’s testing program for experimental features.

Google is also testing an AI Mode tab directly in Search, giving a small group of U.S. users a more seamless experience without needing to visit Labs. This signals a shift toward broader integration of AI in Google’s core search platform.

Users can now ask AI Mode detailed questions that span multiple topics or involve follow-ups. For example, you could search “best lightweight laptop for video editing under $1,000” and then follow up with “does it have a touchscreen?” AI Mode keeps the context, making the experience more conversational.

New Features Add Visual and Personalized Search

One of the standout updates is the introduction of visual cards for places and products. These rich result previews make it easier to explore nearby businesses or items you want to buy. Now, when you search for a place like a restaurant or a nail salon, you’ll get tappable cards showing ratings, hours, reviews, and even how busy the location is in real time.

When shopping for products, you’ll see prices, availability, images, delivery info, and nearby store inventory. For instance, searching for “best camping chair that fits in a backpack under $100” brings up foldable chair options, complete with direct links to buy, specs, and shipping details.

Google wants AI Mode to act as a true shopping and discovery assistant, not just a fact finder. Whether you’re planning a weekend trip, searching for gift ideas, or trying to outfit your home, AI Mode can help you browse results more visually and make informed choices faster.

Another new feature is the ability to pick up where you left off in an AI search session. On desktop, a new panel on the left lets you revisit past conversations, browse earlier search results, and ask follow-up questions without starting over. This is especially helpful for long-term projects like vacation planning or large purchases.

With these improvements, Google is turning AI Mode into a more persistent, context-aware search companion.
