Traditional in-ground sprinkler systems have remained largely unchanged for decades, wasting billions of gallons of water daily. Irrigreen was founded to address this inefficiency, combining cutting-edge hardware and software to reduce waste and costs, particularly as climate change intensifies drought conditions across the U.S.

The Edina-based startup, recognized for its innovative robotic irrigation systems, has secured nearly $19 million in Series A financing, bringing its total funding to nearly $34 million. Led by new and returning investors, including Natural Ventures, Burnt Island Ventures, Ulu Ventures, MFV Partners, Tamiami, and Sum Ventures, the investment will accelerate Irrigreen’s R&D, expand operations, and enhance its customer offerings with smarter, greener solutions.

The company is rapidly scaling. It is expanding its national installer network, investing in new smart products, and enhancing AI-powered software tools for homeowners. One of its recent innovations is an AI-powered quoting tool, which helps homeowners determine how much water they might be wasting on their landscaping.

The Inspiration Behind Irrigreen’s Technology

Founded in 2014, Irrigreen was established not just to help people grow greener lawns but to do so sustainably. Shane Dyer (CEO) and Gary Klinefelter (CTO) co-founded the company, combining expertise in smart home devices and precision spray technology.

The idea for Irrigreen stemmed from Gary’s wife, who noticed the inefficiency of their sprinkler system, which oversprayed the driveway while leaving dry spots in other areas. Gary, who has over 35 patents in precision spray technology, adapted his experience in the inkjet printing industry to develop the first Irrigreen prototype.

Shane Dyer, an expert in IoT and smart home technology, had a passion for delivering climate solutions to consumers. Prior to Irrigreen, he founded Arrayent, a successful IoT platform acquired by Prodea in 2016. When Shane met Gary, their combined knowledge was the perfect catalyst for transforming the inefficient residential irrigation industry.

Instant, Tech-Forward Quotes with Satellite Imagery

Irrigreen has taken a major step forward with the launch of its AI-powered quoting tool, which gives homeowners an instant, custom irrigation plan and estimates of potential water savings. The tool uses satellite imagery to assess lawn area and generate the most efficient watering configuration, transforming a traditionally complicated decision into a seamless digital experience.

The company’s innovation lies in its robotic sprinkler head, which can replace up to eight conventional sprinkler heads by mapping the lawn and watering it with pinpoint precision. Using real-time weather data, it waters only what’s necessary, when it’s needed.

Controlled via a mobile app, the latest model, the Smart Controller 3, has won the 2025 Green GOOD DESIGN Sustainability Award for its automation features, water usage insights, and integration with smart home ecosystems.

Expanding Nationwide with Sustainable Solutions

With over 300 installation partners across the U.S., Irrigreen is primed for nationwide expansion. The new funding will support continued product development, strategic partnerships, and efforts to educate homeowners about the financial and environmental benefits of smarter irrigation.

Irrigreen plans to refine its AI and automation capabilities and expand its range of sustainable landscaping technologies. As water conservation becomes increasingly urgent due to the climate crisis, Irrigreen is positioning itself as a solution for smarter, more sustainable living.

By using up to 50% less water, slashing outdoor water bills in half, and simplifying installation, Irrigreen proves that high-tech sustainability can be both cost-effective and eco-friendly. With its recent funding and growing momentum, it’s set to transform America’s lawns, one smart sprinkler at a time.

“We’re redefining what outdoor smart tech can do,” said Shane Dyer, CEO of Irrigreen. “Our system delivers a healthier, greener lawn with dramatically less water—without the waste or the worry.”

Tom Ferguson, Founder and Managing Partner at Burnt Island Ventures, shared his enthusiasm for the company’s growth, stating, “Irrigreen is modernizing an essential aspect of water use and waste. We’re excited to support their transformative journey in irrigation.”
