In a move that closely mirrors features from its AI competitors, Google has officially rolled out Gemini Canvas, a new interactive workspace designed to help users draft, edit, and share writing and coding projects—all within the Gemini chatbot.
Announced Tuesday, Gemini Canvas gives users a dedicated space where AI-generated content becomes more collaborative and customizable. The feature feels familiar, echoing OpenAI’s Canvas tool for ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Artifacts, both of which aim to turn AI chatbots into full-fledged productivity platforms.
“Canvas is designed for seamless collaboration with Gemini,” said Dave Citron, Gemini’s product director, in a blog post. “These new features make Gemini an even more powerful creative partner, helping you shape ideas into finished content.”

Available directly from the Gemini app on web and mobile, Canvas allows users to generate long-form content, fine-tune sections, and adjust the tone, length, or formatting with easy-to-use tools. Instead of rewriting entire drafts, users can now highlight specific paragraphs and instruct Gemini to make them more concise, professional, or conversational.
Once satisfied, users can export their work to Google Docs with a single click—bridging the gap between AI-generated content and team collaboration.
Canvas isn’t just for writers. Google built in coding capabilities that allow developers to generate and preview HTML, React code, and even web app prototypes—all within the workspace.
For instance, if you need a subscription form for your website, you can ask Gemini to generate the HTML. Canvas immediately renders a live preview of how the form will look and function. You can tweak the code in real time, and Gemini will automatically update the preview—turning AI coding assistance into a hands-on experience.
Audio Overview Brings Podcast-Style Summaries to Gemini
Alongside Canvas, Google introduced another powerful feature: Audio Overview. Previously popularized by NotebookLM, Audio Overview generates realistic podcast-style audio summaries of documents, webpages, and other uploads.
By simply uploading a file, users trigger the Audio Overview shortcut, which then produces a natural-sounding summary. Users can download or share the audio directly from the Gemini app, making it easier to consume large volumes of information on the go. For now, Audio Overview is available only in English.
Available Now — Free for Gemini Users
Both Gemini Canvas and Audio Overview are free for users worldwide starting this week. While Canvas’ code preview feature is currently limited to the web version, Audio Overview works across web and mobile.
With these updates, Google signals a clear intention to compete head-to-head with AI rivals by turning Gemini into a multi-purpose productivity suite—blending writing, coding, and audio tools in a single AI-powered platform.
