Context.ai, a startup focused on building evaluation and analytics tools for AI models, has announced that its co-founders are joining OpenAI, marking the end of the company’s independent operations. As part of what appears to be an acqui-hire, Context.ai will wind down its products, according to a message posted on its official website.
Founded in 2023 by former Google employees Henry Scott-Green (CEO) and Alex Gamble (CTO), Context.ai raised $3.5 million in seed funding from GV (formerly Google Ventures) and Theory Ventures. Over two years, the company worked on tools to help developers better understand AI model performance, aiming to solve one of the industry’s most common pain points — the black-box nature of AI systems.
One of Context.ai’s signature offerings was an analytics dashboard that allowed users to evaluate and visualize how AI models performed during real-world interactions. By integrating with APIs, the platform could group and tag user interactions based on content and intent, offering insights into model accuracy and relevance.
“The phrase I always hear is, ‘my model is a black box,’” Scott-Green said in a 2023 interview. “Most developers don’t know how people are using their models or how well they’re actually performing.”
Now joining OpenAI, both Scott-Green and Gamble will focus on building evaluation tools within the organization. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Scott-Green said the goal is to “create the tools developers need to succeed,” with an emphasis on model evaluation and interpretability.
As of mid-2023, Context.ai had a team of six. It’s unclear whether all employees will transition to OpenAI or how many will remain post-acquisition. OpenAI has not disclosed the terms of the deal.
